Essay Writing Technique

Essay Writing Technique It should be concise and clear and it should be a statement that someone can disagree with a.k.a. an argument. This could be the specific time period you are discussing, country/location, specific case, etc. Being specific about the scope of your paper is like an academic safety guard, diminishing any criticisms for not addressing issues outside of your specified scope. Read the abstract and if that looks promising then read the introduction and the conclusion, skimming through the subheadings and/or the first sentence of each paragraph. Thesis Statementis the most fundamental component to include in your introduction. It is your basic argument, demonstrating what you are trying to prove. Developed by the RLF, it takes you through all the stages of essay writing. Originality in an academic essay is all about the way that you interrogate the material in front of you and the way that you put the material together. Can you show originality and flair in the way that you write your essay? Well, my first guideline for writing an essay is to make sure that you have a clear line of argument. If the essay title is in the form of a question - this might seem obvious - answer the question. Remember the main objective is to support the main line of argument that you want to present to the reader. That doesn't mean that you have to cover absolutely everything that you've read. Come up with your main line of argument, but plan your essay before you launch into the actual writing of the essay. That means that you need to decide exactly what your key points are. So you need a logical sequence of key points that actually build up your argument. It is a great way to get a better idea of different topics, concepts, people, and trivia, but not acceptable for an academic paper. Some general things to keep in mind when doing your research is to be careful to stay on topic and always double check with yourself that the research is relevant to your essay. That means not going too broad, but staying focused on your topic and recognizing that just because something is interesting does not mean that it is necessarily relevant to your argument. then it is clear that a balanced essay is required. Someone in your class/field will be able to help you with the content, while someone not in your class/field is the best audience to test how well you explain your ideas and concepts. You should also look for someone who isn’t afraid to give you constructive criticism. Having said that, remember that everyone writes differently (i.e. has a different style), so you should also be critical of changes offered to you. Reading good journal articles will help you write better by observing how academics develop their arguments. Ask your professor or TA to suggest a couple of well-written articles that you can learn from. Good critical essay writing is shaped by effective planning, following the plan for drafting, and improving by editing and proofreading. TheAlex Essay Writing Toolis a free app that you may find useful. This will give you a pretty good idea if the article will be of use to you and save you time from reading the whole thing. Start with class resources and then move to library resources. Sometimes, using a certain number of class readings is a requirement. It is also a good idea when defining concepts to use class sources and material. Remember to never… EVER use Wikipedia as a cited source. OK, my final guideline for writing an essay concerns originality. You'll probably see in most of the assessment criteria for essays in different subjects across the university that originality is one of the markers of first class essays. My next guideline for writing an essay is to make sure that you give it to someone else to read. In an essay, and even in longer essays like 4,000 word essays, you'll usually only need to have a handful of key points. Well, a lot of students often ask, ‘What do I do to show originality in an essay? Do I just say what my opinion is about the subject matter? ' Well, partly -- but it's not just a matter of expressing your personal opinion without justification or rationale.

Essay Writing Tips That You Should Master

Essay Writing Tips That You Should Master After many years of research, I have developed a special method of quality detection that I call Latent Essay Feature Analysis . I use it to discover what makes a great essay great. Then, I use Model Essay Proximity Scoring to determine how closely your essay resembles the ideal essay response for each test prompt. Therefore, try to explain your position by offering logical and consistent arguments. Don’t contradict yourself, even if you look at the problem from different angles. Now that you understand the basic types of essay formats, here are some tips that will help you create the perfect essay. Conclusion, in which you sum up your views on the topic. While the conclusion may be the smallest piece of the essay, it is often the most important. Make sure you clearly state the conclusion and that it logically follows from the information you have provided. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the proposed issues and solutions, you need to logically support your point of view. Make sure you capitalize proper nouns and use commas and apostrophes correctly. A single obvious error can be enough to ruin your whole essay in the minds of some readers. Be diligent to remove these obstacles before you publish. The piece generated a lot of reaction, much of it focused on the question of what an essay should be. Finally, you have to provide the reader with a concise conclusion. In most cases, it’s safest to keep a formal, distant tone, but English teachers these days are more open to first person references and contractions. The important thing is to be consistent throughout the paper. If you project a light-hearted or sarcastic tone early in the paper, you’ll want to maintain it throughout. Stay away from supporting points that are nothing but vague, abstract thoughts. Lucy is a generalist able to cover a wide range of topics, from marketing to women themes. Feel free to contact Lucy and to check out Buzz Essay. The process work we’re advocating here is multistaged, iterative, messy work. The student may move from the text to questions to freewriting or brainstorming to drafting, then go back to the text and so on, deepening her analysis by asking questions. She may use a range of visually rich, active-learning methods to generate ideas, get her thoughts in order and fill gaps. As she figuring out the story she’s trying to tell, her early drafts will most likely be incomplete, overwritten or hard for the reader to follow. By that I mean take care to avoid glaring errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Proofread carefully and look things up when you are doubtful. If you aren’t good at the fine details of usage, find someone who is and ask for their help. Watch your pronouns and verb tenses in particular. And that means she’ll have to revise and rethink and ask more questions. She’ll come to her overall claim, introduction and conclusion from her discoveries -- not the other way around. We ask students to begin by exploring something specific in the text, rather than a big idea or generalization. That means she must begin by admitting, “I don’t understand” -- a daunting and difficult prospect. A little while back, we wrote an essay arguing against killing off the undergraduate essay.

Easy Guide To Writing A Killer 500 Word Essay

Easy Guide To Writing A Killer 500 Word Essay We can analyse the text in our sample introduction and look at the elements it needs to contain. Please refer to the assignment question on the right hand side of the screen. Add some transitions between the body paragraphs if needed. Look for basic errors like incomplete sentences, copy-paste issues, and the like. If you feel that you need more help in writing an assignment - then you can get free help at the HELPS unit. We’re located in building 1 level 3 room 8, just across from the Concourse café and the Careers Office. Please feel free to come and visit us and chat to an Advisor about receiving academic language support to complete your assesements. Today we are going to have a look at the structure of a body paragraph â€" these paragraphs make up the most substantial part of an essay, report or case study. HELPS is dedicated to providing English language and academic literacy support to UTS undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students via free con-credit programs and services. A concluding sentence that restates your point, analyses the evidence or acts as a transition to the next paragraph represents effective writing. In a previous online tutorial video we introduced you to a real-life assignment question and talked about how to structure the introduction and conclusion to an essay. We will try to make it clearer for you by actually using a sample introduction that was written for a real-life academic essay. Crafting a report is an easy deal whenever you decide to cooperate with us. We will produce a document that will blow the teacher away. No more cramming as the paper is delivered right on time. This is the main point of your paragraph and everything within this paragraph should relate back to it. You might wait a day or so before between the previous step and this final step. This is your chance to tweak the writing and smooth over any awkward phrases. This is the third paragraph of our introduction which contains a preview of the essay. This functions as kind of map to navigate the reader. We can tell that this is a preview from the use of key words such as “this essay will focus on”. Michael recommends that you begin writing your essay by expanding your plan. 'You may find it helpful to write the conclusion first, especially if you know exactly what it is you want to argue,' he adds. 'This can help you to clarify your ideas and also give you something to work towards. Linear plans are useful for essays requiring a rigid structure. Notice the key words which in this case they are ‘academic learning and literacy centres’. Also notice these key words ‘ the most effective approach’. Regardless of the topic or the task, it is very important to understand and analyse the assignment question before embarking on any assignment writing exercise. Notice that further into this paragraph, signposting language is used to designate the structure of the essay, for example phrases such as “the first, second and last section”. Notice too that even a preview into the conclusion is mentioned here. This outline of your essay will set up a sort of contract with your reader, explaining what you will deliver to them in the body of your essay. Let’s imagine then, that we have spent some time and worked on our first draft of our essay and have written the introduction to the essay question. A clear interpretation of the question and a well-structured plan are essential. This may involve discussing your questions, needs and concerns with your tutor, lecturer or subject coordinator to clarify the assignment question or by speaking to a HELPS Advisor. Naturally, you will need to do some background reading to consolidate your ideas before your start planning your essay.

Essay Punch Online

Essay Punch Online I've long been inspired by an idea I first learned about in The Artist's Way called morning pages. It's about getting it all out of your head, and is not supposed to be edited or censored in any way. The idea is that if you can get in the habit of writing three pages a day, that it will help clear your mind and get the ideas flowing for the rest of the day. Unlike many of the other exercises in that book, I found that this one actually worked and was really really useful. Try to be concise and have faith that the strength of your arguments will take you to around 2,500 words. While your essay plan should see you through, there's nothing to say that more ideas won't occur to you as you go along. You've had your brain-fuelling lunch, and now it's time to get typing. Next, decide your approach â€" how are you going to tackle the question? It's your essay and, as long as you keep relating your arguments to the question, you can take it in any direction you choose. Also, if you're using Microsoft Word to write your essay, make use of the automatic referencing system. Now it's time to gather the all-important information and quotes to support your arguments. It might seem a little counter-intuitive to start writing an essay before you've sourced all your quotes and references, but there's a method to our madness. Once you've done this, actually writing the essay should just be a case of bulking out each point and filling in the gaps. Start with the most obvious or all-encompassing argument, as this will allow you to progressively go into more detail on each of the smaller arguments â€" one of the keys to a good essay. The answer is one page single spaced or two pages double spaced. 500 word essays are very common throughout middle and high school English curriculums, especially as book reports, or summaries of current events. It's fun to try to stay on streaks and the points are a way to play around with that. You can also see how others are doing points-wise if you're at all competitive that way. How I see it, points can motivate early on, and eventually the joy of writing will kick in and you'll be writing without any external motivation at all. This is not accurate for academic papers with 1″ margins. This would depend heavily on how big/small you write. it’s like different fonts take up different amount of space on a page, so does your specific handwriting. The best way to know your per page word count would be to look at past pages and count the number of words you write for each page. it’s time consuming, but any other estimate is bound not to be accurate since it’s so dependent on your handwriting. I think actual writing time is a bit optimistic in truth it would be an all-nighter and I have always worked better with less food. A belly full of porridge would send me back to bed but I'm a hefty bloke and missing a meal wont kill me. But, as we touched on earlier, not everyone can get their ideas written down and do it eloquently all in one go. If this is you, then take this time to refine what you've produced and make sure it gets full marks for written communication. Use the research you gathered earlier to support the key ideas you set out in your outline, but don't ramble for the sake of it. Don't worry, it's far from the only brain food that'll help you write an essay. Check out our list of the best foods for brain fuel to see what else will get you off to the best start (and keep that flying start going!). You can easily check page count in word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs, but for a quick reference use our table below. If you write 750 words or more, you get 2 points. Guideline To Standard Essay Form

Guideline To Standard Essay Form It is to check for any grammatical or other logical errors. A short essay is very different from long essays. While writing long essays, you have full freedom to express your ideas in a much bigger space. But, in short essay, you may feel that you don’t have much space to make an argument, as you need to be precise with your words. The main aim is to provide the reader with a new view of the subject. 1 paragraph Introduction, 3 paragraphs body, and 1 paragraph conclusion. The main parts that build up a short essay are introduction, body and a conclusion. Introduction and conclusion should not be more than one paragraph, and the body can be about 3 paragraphs. A short essay should be a minimum of half-page & maximum of 1 page if we work single-spaced. A passionate essay writer always wants to add multiple arguments in his/her essay. But in a short essay, you have to control yourself. Only put useful arguments and weed out irrelevant ones. But, be alert, never remove the most convincing points or else your essay will lose its purpose. Essays can be written long, fully expressing your thoughts on a topic. But, when it comes to writing down a short essay, you need to be very clear with your points. It is crucial to write down the information in a compact manner. Its building blocks are well structured, academic paragraphs. Each paragraph is in itself a smaller argument and when put together they should form a clear narrative that leads the reader to the inevitability of your conclusion. For example, if the assignment says the writing should be in 10-point font, it’s going to take a greater number of words to fill a page than if the assignment requires a 12-point font. There are instances when you’re given an assignment, not by word count, but assigned by the number of pages. ” If you need to figure out words per page, you can use a words per page calculator. However, if you're blessed with the ability to write immaculately and at speed, you may not need this long to edit your essay. If so, allow yourself a little more time after dinner to finish writing your essay. The major feature of a short essay is that you have to limit down the words of your arguments and ideas. Short essays have a specific structure to be followed. It can go up to max 2 pages if we work double-spaced. Short essays should consist of a maximum of 400 words. You can go up to 500 but, if only it’s the need for the topic. The reason that teachers don’t assign a number of pages anymore is because it’s too easy to manipulate pages. When students used to write on typewriters, it was common for teachers to assign essays in number of pages. With the adoption of computers in the classroom, teachers switched from pages to work count because it was too easy for the computers to manipulate the font size and page size. By assigning a word count, teachers get a more accurate length of essay than they would if they assigned homework by pages. The truth is there is no definitive answer to this question. The last sentence of the conclusion part should satisfy the reader. The reader should be satisfied with what he read in the first place in the introduction. For more best essays visit allassignmenthelp.com. Your introduction should build up the interest of the audience, and it should be clear that what is the topic. The three paragraphs in the body part should support the thesis statement. As for the conclusion part, it should not only sum up the argument, but it should also lift up the idea presented in the essay. Ideas which you will present in the essay should be logical, and there should be an easy flow. At last, you should always proofread your essay.

Writing A Research Paper

Writing A Research Paper Doing too little research on the other hand, might not give you enough information on the topic and make for a shorter paper. Also remember, that not all sources you read will be useful, it takes time to find really good sources you can use for your paper. The beginning will contain key introductory phrase . If you want to generate a perfect essay then you should identify a motivation for your document. You can get advice from your supervisor about the topic. Now check the library and internet for information. You can also accumulate information from books and journals. This is important because if your grammar is poor, it will be hard for your essay to be understood. You need to employ the art of using the perfect tense. Tense is the backbone of all writings and many students fail here. They might have the best ideas or points, but their tense will undo all these. Read the abstract and if that looks promising then read the introduction and the conclusion, skimming through the subheadings and/or the first sentence of each paragraph. This will give you a pretty good idea if the article will be of use to you and save you time from reading the whole thing. Now prepare an outline and which includes introduction, conclusion and body. An Abstract is not necessary for an essay, although it essential for research papers and dissertations. There are important stylistic guidelines you should follow in the body of your paragraph. For example, you should try and use the same terminology as you find in the literature in order to sound more professional and scholarly. Here is a very usefulhandouton paragraphs and transition. The size and detail of this depends on the size of the paper. If you are writing a longer paper, this could be its own section. As you write your essay there several things that you should put in mind if you want to write the best essay. One of the factors that you should consider is the purpose of your essay. If the essay is about college application you need to put this in mind as you ponder of ideas for your essay. The introduction is designed to lead people into the subject and simplify what the essay paper will particularly deal with. It usually involves one passage, but this will depend on the time you invest in the composition and the amount of history the situation needs. A certain theme holds the essay together and serves as the point of writing one. If you want to write an essay, below are some steps to get you started. Thirdly, the best way to make writing essays interesting is to include stories that try to explain your points. These stories are usually called anecdotes and are used by professional writers especially in the beginning to captivate the audience. These stories should encourage the reader to relate with what is being discussed. Mainly it addresses the main arguments and debates in the literature on your topic and how your line of argument is consistent or different from those. It will help you to pick up contradictions and weaknesses in your arguments before you start writing and it keeps you from going off-track. This is also a good stage to check with your professor or TA. You can meet with them in person or e-mail them your outline and thesis to get feedback. Check out thisoutline handoutfrom the Writing Centre. You should also ensure that there is transition and flow between each paragraph and between each argument. Try to explain specifically and clearly how each argument relates to your thesis to make sure your essay sounds more cohesive. Also remember that paragraphs are limited to one idea and should also make a clear point that connects to your argument and thesis. Students also tend to fall in the two categories of doing too much research or too little research. Doing too much research can definitely give you a better understanding of the broader issue of your topic, and this can be noticed in your writing. However, you can fall into the trap of adding things that are not necessarily relevant to your topic, resulting in a larger paper then the assignment requires.

However, if you are doing a group work assignment and your lecturer has asked you to work together and submit the assignment jointly, that is not collusion. Collusion, like plagiarism, has an element of dishonesty in it. Planning is an ongoing process, from when you receive the essay title to when you submit your final draft. Do the same thing for all the points that need academic references to support them. Read the abstract and ask yourself if the content of the article is likely to be relevant to your essay. Another option is to use an internet academic search engine such as Google Scholar. N.B. Make sure you are logged in to the library at your educational institution, so that you can use the full database capacities linked to Google Scholar. Fear of the GMATs new Integrated Reasoning Section

So how do GMAT test takers feel about the recent launch of the â€Å"Next Generation† GMAT with its new Integrated Reasoning section? In a Kaplan survey of prospective MBAs, â€Å"more than half of those who had seen actual Integrated Reasoning sample questions said IR questions were ‘not too similar’ or ‘not at all similar’ to other exam questions they’ve had to answer.† In fact, students were trying their best to avoid the IR section altogether, with 38% of those surveyed intentionally taking the test before the new changes. The GMAC even reported â€Å"a recent spike in GMAT test takers as the new exam’s launch date approached.† Plus, those worried about their IR score on the new GMAT can’t cover it up with a stronger performance in the other sections, since a separate score is given for the IR section. So should you now struggle to master those sortable tables and scatter plots for the GMAT Integrated Reasoning section? The answer depends on when you plan to apply. The word on the street is that schools do not intend to rely heavily on the IR score this year. Obviously, you don’t want to bomb it. So don’t ignore graphs, tables, and charts, even if you are applying this year, but also don’t obsess about them. This part of the GMAT is in its infancy; schools recognize that currently in terms of reliability and credibility, it doesn’t have much to stand on. With the passage of time, accumulation of data correlating IR results with performance in b-school, and improvements that GMAC is bound to make, reliance on IR will increase and so will its importance. For those of you planning to apply in the more distant future, you can pretty much count on IR’s rising credibility and significance. Prepare accordingly.   Accepted.com ~ Helping You Write Your Best hbspt.cta.load(58291, '6577a924-55e3-4d9e-bfb5-b0543cc0fe1c');

Christopher Columbus s The New World - 1194 Words

As Christopher Columbus takes the Atlantic Ocean by sail, many scholars take him as to be the â€Å"First† European traveler to have set both feet on the ground of the Americas. As Columbus reaches land on October 12,1492, he first sets foot in the Bahamas, on an island he claims â€Å"San Salvador†. When Columbus writes the letter to Luis de Santangel, the minister of finance for the Spanish crown; he describes the island as â€Å"large and flat, with bright green trees and much water† (Columbus p26). Columbus does not mention anything else that is important with his discovery; he only describes reaching the â€Å"New World† as an idyllic fantasy-like adventure, where on the island, nature is working together peacefully. When news came back from Columbus about his fantasy-like voyage to the â€Å"harmonious† i sland, it received massive attention by traveling literature, such as a poem called â€Å"Bermuda† by Andrew Marvell; it gave European settlers who were back home an ideal depiction of what a voyage would be like going to the New World. However, when the settlers ventured off on a voyage, they did not experience the â€Å"welcoming† feeling as the poem claims it to be; instead, they experienced terrible tragedies such as having to deal with mother-nature, starvation, and excruciating punishments. In this case, Oporto Company has concepts to increase customers and make best quality. This manager type seek employees, who clever on that station. In a conversation on 19 July 2010, Vin, Oporto’s manager has planned the daily shift plans, which tell what station that employees should stand. In the meantime, manager has to know about experiences of employees and also learn what they are suit to work in different station. Overton (2009) suggested this third step like conductor in an orchestra. In addition, conductor is a leader of the orchestra that it needs to control member in the band. From this reason, manager has to motivate employees, the employees, and make them active all the time. First-line manager is a kitchen coordinator that has to do these steps. They have good technical skills and human skills that mean they know how employees feel. They can do all stations. However, employers also use diverse roles from Mintzberg’s management roles. For instance, leaders are motivating, training, and recruiting employees which are the secondary from interpersonal roles (Robbins DeCenzo 2005). Here in, Oporto’s manager must show appreciation with employees after rush hours and also make employees feel please while they are working. Lastly, controlling is how to maintain quality that employees do (Rothbauer-Wanish 2009). Furthermore, this step has to monitor and compare activities that employees do. In this situation, Oporto Company does not have effects but Oporto franchisees are affected. In addition, some people buy franchisee from Oporto Company in Australia but they open store in other countries. For example, the first Oporto franchisee is going to open in United Kingdom. The competitor of Oporto in United Kingdom is Nando restaurant that they are selling chicken products (Nando 2010). The last challenge is unpredictable and rapid change in the environment (Overton 2009). This is a big challenge for Oporto Company. If suppliers have problem about chicken’s products such as chicken size is so small and diseased with chickens, they will have problems with franchisee. In conclusion, this four steps of the management process are created for develop the company to become high standard. All steps are related with each other from planning to organising, to leading, and finish by controlling (Overton 2009). The big challenges of Oporto company are only unpredictable and rapid change for the environment but second challenge is domestic competition has an indirect effect because they have more effect with franchisee in other countries than the head quarter and franchisee in Australia. Organizations have many diverse roles to use and it has to adapt by depend on type of companies. Meanwhile, good companies must have good plot of management process by good managers. They also make balance efficiency and effectiveness for increase performance of companies. Hence, challenges of companies shown ability of managers to plan management process without problem or trouble and increase the standard of companies to above best level, which means excellent with less resources.

Over the years, researchers have tried to measure returns on different heath care interventions or programs using economic analysis framework. In last few decades several indicators have been developed for making economic evaluation of different healthcare interventions. Among those indicators, the two most important and widely used indicators are quality adjusted life years (QALY) and disability adjusted life years (DALY). These two composite indicators are being increasingly used by researchers and policymakers of health care sectors of most of the countries across the world. The paper makes an attempt to critically evaluate each of these composite indicators which are helping policymakers in the healthcare sector to decide which intervention should be made available to the patients. The paper will first discuss the definitions and underlying concepts of each of these two indicators along with their uses, then it will move on to discussing the method of calculation for each of them and examine advantages and disadvantages of them, and finally look into their applications. Superstitions in India Essay Example for Free

Superstitions in India Essay Superstitions are based on ignorance and there is no place for superstitions but in the darkness. The best way to remove superstitions is to educate the people and given them light of reason. A true knowledge of Nature and God will take the place of blind beliefs and false traditions and this only can should the death-knell of superstitions. —Samuel Smiles. Superstitions are unreasoned and irrational beliefs of the people living in the past or in the present age. When certain happenings cannot be rationally explained, people assign mysterious and inexplicable reasons for their operation. This faith of the people in irrational things takes the form of superstitions. Superstitions are, therefore, unreasoned beliefs which have a chronic kind of intensity in their evil. In old primitive times, superstitions governed the majority of people. Those days were such that it favored the growth of superstitions. Superstitions enjoyed their hey-day of glory when the civilization and science had not lighted the darkness of the ignorance of the primitive people. Lack of scientific advancement is another cause of the growth of superstitions. They find a rich soil for germination at a time and in a country where science and philosophy have not had their hold on the masses. Unenlightened people always tend to be superstitions. Undue reverence for traditions and customs prevailing in a particular society also make people superstitions in their ideas. This belief in the sacredness of time and old traditions of ancestors, keep people in the pale of superstitious thought. The tricks of the priests also exercise their unhealthy effect and people with a religious orthodoxy are prove to fall an easy prey to these superstitious agencies. Superstitions have continued to exercise their sway on all classes of people all over the world. There are certain common superstitions which are shared by all the people in the world. Belief in spirits, ghosts, and witches is a common superstition among all the people of the world. Even today belief in witches is present in India, Scotland, England, France and many other countries. People, especially in India and other countries of the East, still believe in ghosts. The cries of certain birds like owl and ravenes and mewing of cats are regarded with superstitions all over the globe. There is a very common belief that when comets are seen, they portend the death of kings or great men. When beggars die there are no comets seen. The heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes. In India, every activity of life is associated with some sort of superstition. It is supposed to be bad if somebody sneezes behind or calls back a man who is leaving his home for a journey. He must stop for a while to let the ill-luck pass. It is again ominous if he sees an empty vessel or a broom right in front of the house. The story of Ram Chandra, coming across a snake on the left hand side and a jackal on the right hand side while he was coming back to his hut in the jungle is widely known. He at once guessed that some misfortune had befallen Sita. The sight of a dead body or a cow feeding her calf or a full pitcher is considered as auspicious while one is on a journey. Stories of ghosts and evil spirits are very common in all the countries of the world and especially in India. After death, a person changes into a ghost. Sometimes, a ghost molests the other members of the family generally, a pipal tree is supposed to be the haunt of ghosts. The fear of ghosts is so great that some people worship them in their homes without giving them any shape and form. The ghosts are offered sweets, cakes, clothes and many such Other articles to please them and bribe them against doing any kind of harm to the people. Generally, the illiterate and ignorant people believe in superstitions. In villages, the people believe that small-pox, cholera and some fevers all are caused by the displeasure of he-ghosts and she-ghosts. The small pox, whenever it spreads in the form of epidemic, is supposed to be the result of the wrath of the Goddess Shitaladevi. Numerous beliefs of this type are prevalent in villages. Sometimes, such miracles take place in the cure of such diseases that one is surprised at and compelled to believe in these superstitions. Indians have a blind belief in, Sadhus though the cases of cheating by the Sadhus are generally heard. The ashes given by the Sadhus to their devotees are considered as something extraordinarily holy. The tradition of observing Terahvi in Indian families is another superstition. Hindus believe that souls of the dead persons exist in some form or the other for about eleven days in the family. The family becomes free form the impurity of death on the twelfth day. On this day Brahmins are fed and given charities to give peace to departed soul. These acts of giving charities to the Brahmins and feeding them or repeated every year in the month of Kwar. This observance is called Shradha. People have a great faith in palmistry, astrology and horoscope. There may be some experts in them here and there but generally, we come across, cheats, who exploit innocent persons and befool them. Superstitions differ from place to place and caste to caste. In South India, the sight of a black cat, crossing the way in front of one is considered to be very inauspicious. In Punjab, the sight of a Brahmin right in the morning is supposed to bring one misfortune for the whole day. But a Brahmin is not looked upon as inauspicious elsewhere. The sight of a cobbler, oilmen or washer man bring ill-lack to one in U. P. ut not in Punjab, It should not be surprising that some of English superstitions are very similar to certain superstitions prevalent in India. But in England and India the following of a dog at night without any apparent cause is supposed to indicate the presence of a spirit nearby. As in Indian villages, people believe in witches, so do the people of England and Wales who live in remote villages. The only panacea for all the social evils like superstitions is education. To make the backward and superstition minded Indians enlightened, education should be spread widely. Education cultivates reasoning and thinking in a human being and as soon as a person comes under the shelter of reason and scientific outlook, he or she, becomes free from blind beliefs. Indians by nature are fatalists and they do not apply their energy to work for the betterment of their lot. This is the greatest superstition which has undermined and is still undermining the real prosperity of India. People should be properly educated and should be inspired to be hard working and honest. Then, we should judge everything by the strong light of reason, having firm faith in God.

Analysis Of 1984 :: essays research papers

Analysis of 1984 In 1949, an Englishman named Eric Blair published the novel 1984. Under the pseudonym, George Orwell, this author became one of the most respected and notable political writers for his time. 1984 was Orwell’s prophetic vision of the world to come. This creation of â€Å"Negative Utopia† was thoroughly convincing through Orwell’s use of setting and characterization. The theme conveyed by Orwell is that no matter how strong an individual a communist society would destroy any hope that that soul had of surviving, and that no matter the reasons told to the society, that power that the Party seeks is for no gain except for power. The story begins in April of 1984, in a grim, industrialized city called London. London was â€Å"chief city of Airstrip One, itself the third most populous of the provinces of Oceania." The dwellings that the people live in, called Victory Mansions, are depicted as â€Å"†¦rotting nineteenth-century houses, their sides shored up with balks of timber, their windows patched with cardboard and their roofs with corrugated iron†¦.† The setting creates a mood of devastation and hopelessness, fabricated by the Inner Party to suppress its followers. These people live in a society that is ruled by totalitarianism, and the aim is to give the greatest good to the smaller number. As indicated by â€Å"Cliffs Notes,† on pages 34 and 35, the main character, â€Å"Winston, like others, is expected to do his job efficiently and receive no reward but the opportunity to live austerely for the greater good and self-perpetuation of the Inner Party.† Told in third person limited, the reader is only allowed in-depth knowledge of the protagonist, Winston. Winston Smith, a thirty-nine year old man with a varicose ulcer, is a member of the Outer Party. He has â€Å"a smallish, frail figure, the meagerness of his body merely emphasized by the blue overalls which were the uniform of the Party. His hair was very fair, his face naturally sanguine, his skin roughened by course soap and blunt razor blades and the cold of the winter that had just ended.† Winston works in the Ministry of Truth, which is concerned with news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts. He is employed in the Records Department, where his tasks consist of writing and rewriting scripts to fit the present and past which unceasingly fluctuate and add to the dominion the Party had over its members, and the history they believe in.

Article Review Essay

Conducting their study as the transitional funding attached to the peace process in Northern Ireland is reaching its end, the authors examine the role of aid in conflict resolution particularly with regards to intangible outcomes such as identity formation. The idea behind this funding is that it reduces economic disparities between the conflicting groups and that the economic growth started by this funding will continue into the future. These funds come from the International Fund for Ireland (IFI), which addressed unemployment and poverty in Republican / Loyalist communities; the Peace I funds, which promoted social inclusion, cross-community contact, and economic development; and the Peace II funds (ended in 2006), which had similar goals to Peace I but targeted local, grassroots (nongovernmental) organizations. The authors also consider the role of external agencies as they intervene in ethnopolitical conflict and the importance of community development in the peace process. The authors are careful to note that economic aid is not a magic cure for conflict as this aid, if improperly administered, can at times heighten underlying conflicts. Indeed, in Northern Ireland, the approach has had mixed results. In designing their study, the authors took both a qualitative and quantitative approach. For the qualitative portion, the authors interviewed 98 community leaders, civil servants, and development officers from Belfast, Londonderry/Derry, and the Border region (Northern Ireland). These interviews consisted of semi-structured questions, including those attached to the Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale: â€Å"What are your best wishes and hopes for your personal future? What are your worst fears and worries about your personal future? What are your best wishes and hopes for the future of your country? What are your worst fears and worries about the future of your country? † (page 166). The quantitative data was drawn from the summer 2006 Northern Ireland Public Opining Survey. The sample consisted of 1,023 adults representative of Northern Ireland’s adult population. The study as a whole was designed to look at the respondents hopes and fears about Northern Ireland’s future. Through the inclusion of qualitative data, the authors hoped to demarginalize voices that are often not heard in the official discourses of the peace process. This study yielded numerous tantalizing findings. First, the authors found that more Nationalists than Unionists imagine a future where conflicting groups are able to perceive a sense of shared community. Second, the authors found differences based on gender: more females than males saw the opportunity for building new relationships amongst communities in the future. Third, the authors found two common fears / concerns that extend across religions, genders, and ages: the fear that violence in changing the social fabric of Northern Ireland and the belief that politicians are disingenuous and not interested in serving the needs of their constituency. Fourth, the authors found that more Nationalists than Unionists saw the modernization of the economy and the political structure as means by which to support the peace process. Finally, the authors found that younger adults were more concerned about the potential failure of the peace process and the economy than older adults The authors consider numerous theories about identity formation. In designing their study, they took into consideration geographic differences in identity formation: i. e. Londonderry/Derry vs. Belfast and urban vs. rural locations. They also consider how the Irish view immigration and the infiltration of outside values. In general, this article is not convincing. Its primary strength is the detailed background to the conflicts in Northern Ireland, with a focus on the economic causes and effects of this conflict. This strength does not mitigate the effects of the article’s numerous weaknesses. First, the authors do not explicitly state their hypothesis. While exploratory studies such as this one can potentially reveal valuable information, the authors nowhere state the reasons behind the study. When questions such as identity formation are being explored, the readers need to know the authors’ relationship to the issue. For example, are the authors somehow involved in this ethnopolitical conflict? Or, are they looking at it from the perspective of an outsider? If they are outsiders, does their perspective have a bearing on how the respondents answer their questions? Second, the authors explicitly state that they wish to demarginalize those voices that are not typically heard in the official peace process discourse. However, in selecting the respondents for the qualitative portion of the study, the authors chose community leaders, civil servants, and development officers. It would seem that these are precisely the voices that are heard in the official discourse. Readers are left to wonder why the authors did not include a more representative sample of the population of Northern Ireland for this portion of the study. Third, this does not seem to be a study that was designed specifically to answer certain questions. As noted, the authors nowhere state a hypothesis. For the reader, it appears that the quantitative and qualitative data seems to have been mixed together ad hoc. In other words, the study does not seem to be designed to fit a specific question. Rather, the authors appear to have attempted to answer questions based on the information they had at hand. Fourth, as the basis for this study was largely to examine economic role of the peace process, it seems like a gross oversight that the authors did not provide data on their respondents’ demographics. In the discussion section, the authors indicate that they collected background demographic information (political party, religious views, age, gender, socioeconomic status) on the respondents, but this information was not included in the results section and does not appear to have been considered in any significant way. Finally, the analysis of the qualitative data seems a bit lacking. It would perhaps have been stronger to indentify the common themes and subthemes of the responses, rather than using the responses as illustrative examples. Because of these specific weakness as well as the authors’ failure to mention the limitations of their study and to provide specific recommendations for how their results can be used to generate future studies and/or to impact the peace process, this article is not convincing.

The Bronze And Iron Age Essay - 2093 Words

Classics Essay Question: 1-What Can Homer tell us about the Bronze and Iron Age The Bronze and Iron Ages were 2 of the main periods in Greek History and Homer can tell us a lot about them. The Bronze Age was all about mixing copper with tin or arsenic to bronze hence it is called the Bronze Age. The Iron Age was when the whole of the east Mediterranean was in crisis. The both tell the story of heroes trying to survive their way through war and other things.
